FAQ

Got questions? We've got answers.

What is Seminary?

Seminary is a religious education class for youth ages 14-18. It helps you come closer to Jesus Christ through scripture study, discussion, and personal application.

What do we study in Seminary?

Each year in seminary, you will learn from a different book of scripture. These are called the "standard works." They include:
  • Old Testament
  • New Testament
  • Book of Mormon
  • Doctrine and Covenants/Church History
You will also have Life Preparation Lessons each year that help you with everyday challenges and choices.

What if I don't know much about the scriptures?

That's okay! Seminary is for everyone - whether you know a lot or are just starting to learn. Your teacher and classmates will help you learn little by little. That's what matters most!

Do I have to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to attend?

Nope! Everyone is welcome. Seminary is open to all youth who want to learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Can I join partway through the year?

Absolutely. It's never too late to start.

What if I'm shy or nervous?

That's totally normal. Seminary is a safe, supportive place where you can be yourself and feel the Spirit. Reach out to the seminary principal to let them know about your needs and concerns, and they can help place you in a class that will be a good fit for you.

How do I sign up for seminary?

Your parents will help you sign up online at myseminary.churchofjesuschrist.org. They'll use their Church account to log in. The first time you sign up, they'll agree to the rules for seminary. Each year, your parent will log into myseminary.churchofjesuschrist.org to check your contact information and choose which seminary you'll go to. Your local Seminary can also help you!
If you're going to Release-Time Seminary (during school hours), you'll also need to add seminary to your school schedule. If you are homeschooled, let the seminary know which period works best for you.

What if my parent doesn't have a Church account? How do we get help?

You can still sign up using the Guest Registration option. Just fill in the information it asks for. Someone from Seminary will contact you to help with the next steps.

What if I'm not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Should I still create a Church account?

Yes! Anyone can create a Church account - it's free and easy. Having an account helps you (or your parents) sign up for seminary and use helpful tools like MySeminary where you can see your attendance, lessons, and progress. Accounts can be created at Church Account.

What if I'm busy with school, sports, music, service, or have unique circumstances?

That's okay! Seminary has different ways to help you join seminary even if your schedule is full. Check out our Class Types page to find what works best for you.

Do I have to graduate from seminary to finish high school or go on a mission?

No, you don't have to graduate from seminary to finish high school or become a missionary. But seminary is a great way to learn about Jesus and grow your faith.
Many youth say seminary helps them:
  • Feel closer to the Savior.
  • Understand the scriptures better.
  • Get ready to serve others.
In some countries, people need to show they've studied religion—like attending seminary—before they're allowed to share their beliefs with others.
Even though it's not required, seminary will bless your life in many ways!

Why would I want to graduate from seminary?

  • It shows you worked hard and kept learning for four years.
  • Many youth feel happy and confident when they finish seminary and want to celebrate.
  • It helps you get ready to serve a mission, go to the temple, or take on additional responsibilities in the Church.
  • It gives you strong gospel habits that can help you make good choices for the rest of your life.
